Kummiyadikku oru thanchavum unde, kuppivalachiri chanthavum unde
Ambu kanakkane nottavum unde, koottarum kande!
[There is a rhythm for kummiyadi* dance, there is beauty to the glass bangles laughing
there are looks (being given) as sharp as arrows, even the friends saw it!]
Chenda kuzhal vili, anthi chukappoli,
muttathu alayoli, vattathilu kali
[(To) the sound of drums and kuzhal**, (under) the red shade of twilight

slipping slowly for a moment into those times which were seen and forgotten, sweet voice…]

*Kummiyadi is a women’s group dance which involves a lot of clapping hands individually and with your partners. Here is a video of the kummiadi part of Thiruvathira dance.
**Kuzhal is a traditional reed instrument used in South India for celebrations.
***Thumbi thullal is a women’s folk dance where one or two women sit in the middle and the rest dance around singing songs. The one(s) in the center will let their hair down and move their upper body in circles while sitting. At one point as the song builds up tempo, they will get into a trance. Here is a video of Thumbi thullal.
+I’m not fully sure if I got the meaning correctly here. The first word is hard to hear with the speed that line is sung with, so I think it is ‘chintha'(thoughts).
****Valli oonjal is a swing made of a jungle vine rope. In old times, instead of ropes people used to cut down strong vines which could withstand being used as swing ropes. Here is a video of making a jungle vine swing.

++This folksy song is about the atmosphere of a festival celebration in a village. The refrain talks about a sacred grove temple with a Goddess and the festival sights happening around it. The first stanza talks about kummiyadi and thiruvathira where womenfolk dance around in circles with clapping hands. The air is filled with the accompanying music, the jingles of glass bangles and stolen looks exchanged between love interests which were then caught by friends. All the sounds bring back sweet memories of past for some people. In the second stanza, the when women let their hair down, their hearts do a thumbi thullal dance for a moment. While on the swing going up, the worrying thoughts are given up as prayers to the Goddess hoping She will find answers to the troubles.
