Kannadi Koodum

(Translation on request for JG)
Aarathi and Maya, close friends in college, are polar opposites in character. Maya is an lively prankster while Aarathi is a subdued amateur poet. Aarathi gets introduced to Vinayachandran, a high ranking law enforcement officer and a family friend of Maya, when he visits their college for annual day as the presiding guest. He commends Aarathi on her poem recital. Maya realizes Aarathi has a crush on him and decides to play a prank by sending letters posing as Vinayan. Maya’s family introduces Vinayan as a potential match for herself and this puts Maya in a difficult situation. Despite Maya’s attempts to intercept the letter, Aarathi receives it and thinks Vinayan likes her. She daydreams about her and Vinayan’s love story. A song saluting a union from the movie Pranayavarnangal.

Mmm…

Kannaadi koodum kootti, kannu ezhuthi pottum kuthi,
kaavalam painkili vaayo…
[Making a nest of mirrors, lining eyes and wearing bindi,
hey kaavalam bird*, come this way…]
Kunjaatta penninu udukkan kudamulla kodiyum aayi,
kookiyum kurukiyum vaayo…
[Carrying clothes of jasmine bunches for the kunjaatta** girl to wear,
come cooing and crooning this way…]
Mazha olum manjalle?, mulayola koodalle?
Azhaku olum mizhiyoram kulir oorum kanavalle?
[Isn’t this a fog with rain? isn’t this a nest made of bamboo leaves?
In your beautiful eyes, isn’t this a dream oozing pleasant chill?]
Manavalan vannu vilichal naanam kollum manasalle?
[When the groom comes to pick you up, won’t your heart fill with shyness?]

Kannaadi koodum kootti, kannu ezhuthi pottum kuthi,
kaavalam painkili vaayo…
[Making a nest of mirrors, lining eyes and wearing bindi,
hey kaavalam bird*, come this way…]
Kunjaatta penninu udukkan kudamulla kodiyum aayi,
kookiyum kurukiyum vaayo…
[With clothes of jasmine bunches for the kunjaatta** girl to wear,
come cooing and crooning this way…]

Eheh…

Poovil, ee pullankuzhalil, penne nee mooli unarthum
paattinte pallavi ente kathil oathumo?
[In the flower, in this flute, hey girl, that you hum and awaken…
this song, will you tell me the refrain to that in my ears?]
Melle ee chillu nilavil, mulle nin muthu pozhikkum
kinnara kaattu thalir poo nulli nokkiyo?
[Softly in this glassy moonlight, hey jasmine, scattering your pearls…
this adorable breeze, did it pinch off your budding flowers?]
Aarum kaanath(e)ennulil oro moham pookumpol
eenathil paadi poonkuyil…
[Without anyone seeing, inside me, when desires bloom one by one
the beautiful cuckoo sang in tune…]
Aa…

Kannaadi koodum kootti, kannu ezhuthi pottum kuthi,
kaavalam painkili vaayo…
[Making a nest of mirrors, lining eyes and wearing bindi,
hey kaavalam bird*, come this way…]
Kunjaatta penninu udukkan kudamulla kodiyum aayi,
kookiyum kurukiyum vaayo…
[With clothes of jasmine bunches for the kunjaatta** girl to wear,
come cooing and crooning this way…]

Manjil, e munthiri valliyil allipoo poothu virinjal
kaanum njan ente kinavil ninte poomukham
[In the mist, on this grape vine, when the flowers blossom
I see your beautiful face in my dreams]
Ennum raakoonthal azhichittu enne poom pattu puthakkum
punnara thoomani muthe nee varum naal
[Every night, covering me in a silky blanket of unfastened hair
my darling little pearl, the day you come…]
Pookkum naavo ponpoovo, thooval veeshum venpraavo
nenjoram nerum bhavukam?
[Will it be a flowery tongue or a beautiful flower, or a white dove fanning its feathers
offer us hearty wishes to good life?]
Aa…

Kannaadi koodum kootti, kannu ezhuthi pottum kuthi,
kaavalam painkili vaayo…
[Making a nest of mirrors, lining eyes and wearing bindi,
hey kaavalam bird*, come this way…]

*Kaavalam kili is another name for common myna, a bird native to Indian subcontinent. Some birds like preening in mirrors and myna is one such. The lyricist could be refering to that behaviour here with the nest of mirrors. It is also a reference to the helpers to the protagonist in the video.
**Kunjaatta or aattakuruvi is baya weaver bird. Here it refers to the protagonist who is being adorned.

    1. I did listen to it many times, I couldn’t make a distinction to be honest. What I’m hearing is naavu, na sound not the ra sound. Do you have confirmed lyrics from somewhere?

        1. Even though I’m thankful that they exist, I don’t always trust lyrics websites out on the internet because a lot of times I have found mistakes and they all seem to repeat (as if someone has copied the same mistake to all sites). I listen to the song and write down the lyrics myself. If something doesn’t make sense/ is not clear because of bgm, I have consulted these sites to see if they have a word which makes sense. If they do not make sense to me, I don’t use it. Unless someone in the industry who has worked with the song confirms or disagrees with it (which has happened to me, lol) OR I had gotten an interpretation utterly wrong and someone (anyone) points it out, I don’t intend to change it.
