Olanjali kuruvi ilam kaattil aadi varu nee
koottu koodi kinungi mizhi peeli melle thazhuki
[Hey olanjali* bird, come by swinging in the light breeze
With a tinkling friendly chirp and stroking the eyelashes]

Olanjali kuruvi ilam kaattil aadi varu nee
koottu koodi kinungi mizhi peeli melle thazhuki
[Hey olanjali* bird, come by swinging in the light breeze
With a tinkling friendly chirp and stroking the eyelashes]
Naruchiri naalumani poovu pol virinjuvo?
Cheru mashithandu neetti vannu aduthu ninnuvo?
[Did your adorable smile blossom like naalumani** flower?
Did you stand near offering a small mashithandu*** stem?]
Manimadhuram nunayum kanavin mazhayilo,
nanayum njaan aadyam aayi?
[Is it in this dreamy rain where I savor on sweetness,
will I get wet for the first time?]

Ee pulariyil karukakal thaliridum vazhikalil,
Nee nin mizhikalil ilaveyil thriryum aayi varikayo?
[On this morning, on the path where grasses spring,
Are you arriving with bright eyes lit as if by soft sunlight?]
Janal azhi vazhi pakarum nanunane oru madhuram
oru kudayude thanalil anayum neram pozhiyum mazhayil
[Through the window bars, we share a soft sweet
while we get under the same umbrella, rain starts showering]

Olanjali kuruvi ilam kaattil aadi varu nee
koottu koodi kinungi mizhi peeli melle thazhuki
[Hey olanjali* bird, come by swinging in the light breeze
With a tinkling friendly chirp and stroking the eyelashes]

Vaa chirakum aayi cheru vayalkilikal aayi alayuvaan
Poonthaen mozhikalaal kurumani kuyilu pol kurukuvaan
[Come with your wings, to wander around like little sparrows in a field
To croon sweet nothings to each other like cuckoos]
Kalichiriyude viralaal thodukuri idum azhaku aayi
Cheru kolussinte kilukilukkathin thaalam manassil nirayum
[With a finger of playfulness, dotting beauty
Heart fills with beats of jingling small anklets]

* Olanjali/Olenjali kuruvi/Rufous Treepie is a bird native to Kerala.
**Naalumani poovu/Mirabilis literally means four o’ clock flower. This is usually grown in home gardens in Kerala.
***Mashithandu is a plant native to Kerala. In old times, children used slate tabs and chalk for writing in school instead of notebooks. This plant has fluid/water inside which is used to erase chalk letters written on slates. So this is basically an eco-friendly eraser which used to grow like weeds everywhere. There are other medicinal uses for it too.
