Kunju Kunjali

Kunjali Marakkar is the post of the naval chieftain Samoothiri(Zamorin) who ruled the Kingdom of Calicut. Kunjali Marakkar IV is hailed as the “Lion of Arabian Sea” for winning many naval wars for the Zamorin. A lullaby for young Kunjali sung by his mother from the movie Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham.

Karunya rabbu ente kaikalil thanna manikyakalle mizhi poottuka pathiye,
Naalathe sooryante chaelotha roopam maanathin mele kanikandu ini unaraan,
[The one who the kind God gifted, hey precious gem slowly close your eyes
To see the beauty of tomorrow’s sun up in the sky when you wake up]
Naru vennilave thazhukan varille thalolam meyil,
Ennomal thankathin chandangal kande, kannonnum vaykalle raathinkal penne
[Hey pure moonbeams, won’t you come to caress softly on his body
Seeing my precious darling’s beauty, do not cast evil eyes on him moon girl!]

Kunju kunjaliku onnu urangenam,
rariram raro rariram raro
[Little Kunjali wants to sleep]

Neru okkum aanatham vavaku venam, veeru ullil venam kanivu ulloru karalum,
Nadinnu vendunnon aakenam neeyum, meghangal thottu makane ini valaru
[My baby should have true masculinity, courage and kindness in the heart
You should be loved by the land, please grow touching the clouds my son]
Chuvadonnu vaykke, viralonnu thanne njanilla koode,
Ennennum kunjali vazhatte mannil!, Ummaykku thannunni ponnunni alle!*
[While you take a step, give me your finger, I am beside you
Long live my Kunjali on this earth! For a mother, her son is the most precious!]

*There is a saying in Malayalam – Kaakkaykkum than kunju ponkunju (Even for a crow, its own child is a golden child) to describe how mothers are, when it comes to their own children. This line is using a similar choice of words.
