Moovanthiyaayi

(Translation on request for MS & GT)
Balan, a civil servant in his 40s, stays in Goa for a few days to get away from his overbearing father-in-law and uncaring wife. There he meets his ex-girlfriend Nandini who is a nationally acclaimed author. They had broken up sorrowfully but amicably as Balan had to marry into a rich family to save his family from money lenders whom his late dad owed a lot. When Balan finds out Nandini never married he feels guilt while Nandini assures him it wasn’t for revenge or sacrifice, but it just happened that way. Balan then tells her even though he’s married, his life isn’t any better as he is also fighting loneliness. A song about how pain stays with someone through the night from the movie Pakshe.

Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam+
Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]
Theerangalil, baashpadeepangalil, oarithal naalam aayi nombaram
[On the shores, across gas lanterns, pain became a petal of flame]
Aaa…Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]

Raavu aere aayi piriyaan aruthaathoru novin raappadikal,
Raavu aere aayi piriyaan aruthaathoru novin raappadikal,
choodathoraa poompeelikalaal koodu onnu koottiyallo
[As the night gets longer, these nightingales of pain who do not want to leave
with the fallen soft feathers, they made a nest]
Janmangal ee veenayil meettum eenam moolunnu raakkattukal
[The night breezes hummed the tunes which the many births had played on this veena]

Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]
Theerangalil, baashpadeepangalil, oarithal naalam aayi nombaram
[On the shores, across gas lanterns, pain became a petal of flame]
Ooo..Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]

Yaamangalil kozhiyaan madi aayi oru thaaram thengunnuvo?
Yaamangalil kozhiyaan madi aayi oru thaaram thengunnuvo?
[The star which is hesitant to fall as the hours go by, is it sobbing?]
Innu ormayil kilivaathilukal* thaane thurannuvallo
Doorangalil enthino kannu chimmi veendum nishagandhikal
[In memories, the little windows opened by themselves today
At a distance, for some unknown reason the queen of night flowers blinked again ]

Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]
Theerangalil, baashpadeepangalil, oarithal naalam aayi nombaram
[On the shores, across gas lanterns, pain became a petal of flame]
Ooo…Moovanthi aayi pakalil raavin viral sparshanam
[As twilight, the night touches on the day]

+Viral sparshanam means touch of a finger. Lyricist is imagining the night touching the day with dusk.
*Kilivaathil literally translates to bird door. Kilivaathil is a small window the traditional Kerala homes has/had where women folk can peep out to know what is happening outside without interfering.(Picture)

  1. I had heard this song and even watched the film before. Being a Non-Malayalee, it was difficult for me to understand what was going on.( Wish they put eng subs to 80′-90’s malayalam films)….from what I understood, I thought it was bit similar to their other film- Pavithram. Your song translation helped understanding it better. Keep doing this. 🙂

    1. Yeah, it is sad that most are out there without subtitles. The ones which has them are lost in translation.

Story line is a bit different in Pavithram as it focuses more on the brother-sister relationship. I feel Pakshe is comparable with Mazhayethum Munpe (Mammooty/Shobhana/Annie starrer) though.
