Gopan witnesses his friend Ravi being kidnapped during a rainstorm. He chases the kidnappers’ car on his motorbike and finds Ravi dead and abandoned on the side of the road. He goes back to fetch help from the police, but when they arrive the body is missing. Police charges the case as a murder and starts investigation. They accuse Gopan as the killer with a motive of jealousy and provides evidence of a tape recording which has Gopan’s voice saying ‘Dear Maya…’ to Ravi’s love interest Maya. Gopan tells them they have misjudged the occasion and that Ravi was present when this was taped. Then he reminisces the day where he sang a poem Ravi wrote for Maya in the presence of both of them while being taped. A song about unexpressed love from the movie Vachanam.

+Neermizhi peelyil neermani thulumbi nee en arikil ninnu..
[With tear drops spilling over eyelashes you stood beside me]
Kannuneer thudakkaathe, onnum parayaathe,

[Without wiping your tears, not uttering anything,
I stood there too as if I’m a stranger…as if I’m just a stranger]

[(Even though) I’m an unfamiliar co-traveler, I feel your heart’s beats]

[Without us realizing how many did we not exchange, our wishes and pain]
Neermizhi peelyil neermani thulumbi nee en arikil ninnu..
[With tear drops spilling over eyelashes you stood beside me]
Kannuneer thudakkaathe, onnum parayaathe,

Mmmm…
+ Here is an interesting tit bit about the first line of the song. For people who cannot read Malayalam, I’m going to paraphrase the content of this article – The lyricist of this song is O.N.V. Kurup had actually written the first line as “Neelmizhipeeliyil neer mani thulumbi” which means “With tear drops spilling over long eyelashes”. Yesudas while recording the song sang it as “Neermizhipeeliyil..” and no one noticed it for a while until it was ready for releasing. At the time they couldn’t get a hold of Yesudas to correct it in time as he was travelling internationally.
*Ulpoovu literally translates to inner flower. Lyricist may have meant either heart or soul here.
