Kanakku

(Translation on request for AS)
Sujatha, a maid who works at different places to make ends meet and give her daughter a better life, realizes that her daughter is a lazy girl despite being intelligent. She tries to prove a point to her daughter by taking up the daunting task of finishing high school which she had abandoned because of life responsibilities. Mathematics as a whole is a conundrum for both mom and daughter and the song is about how hard it is.

Aiyyo! kanakku kanakku, aiyyayyo kizhichu pirithu
aiyyo harichu gunichu, vayyallo!
[Oh No! This mathematics, oh no! all these subtracting and separating
Oh no! Dividing, multiplying, can’t do this anymore!]
Aiyyo kanakku kanakku, aiyyayyo thalakku peruppu
aiyyo perutha kurukku veenallo!
[Oh No! This mathematics, oh no! my head is exploding
On no! I am tangled in this huge knot!]

Thanlangum vilangum* kanakku, ammammo!
sherikkum kadalin nadukku pettallo!
[Wherever I look, is this mathematics! Oh Mother!
Like we are stuck in the middle of an ocean! ]

Aiyyo! kanakku kanakku, aiyyayyo kizhichu pirithu
aiyyo harichu gunichu, vayyallo!
[Oh No! This mathematics, oh no! all these subtracting and separating
Oh no! Dividing, multiplying, can’t do this anymore!]

Chuvadu idari veezhathe onnu ee
ganithamala aeri pokaan
[Without slipping and falling
to ascend this mathematics mountain,]
duritha vazhi thaandum soothram,
cheru gulika aayi kayyil aekumo?
[the trick to traverse its miserable path,
can I be presented that, as a little pill?]

Alavukalil aanu ennennum
bhoomiyude thaalam polum
[In (mathematical) measures, always
even the beats of the earth]
padana muri aanu ee lokam
neele arivu
[this world is a classroom
is a common knowledge]

Maanasame ini nee ariyu, thalaraathe uyaru…
Jeevitham pareeksha enna nerarinju punchirichu
[My heart, please know, (and) rise up without getting demotivated…
This life itself is a test, knowing this truth I smiled]

Ullil aashichoru unnam ethanam
Kanneer illatha naalil ethanam
[I have to reach the target (I have set for myself) in my mind
I want to reach (the point where my) days (are spend) with no tears]
Poojyathil ninnum onnil ethuvaan
ithrayum neramo? ithrayum dooramo?
[From zero, to reach one (the first place)
Does it take this long? Is it that far?]

Ullil aashichoru unnam ethanam
Kanneer illatha naalil ethanam
[I have to reach the target (I have set for myself) in my mind
I want to reach (the point where my) days (are spend) with no tears]
Poojyathil ninnum onnil ethuvaan
ithrayum neramo? ithrayum dooramo?
[From zero, to reach one (the first place)
Does it take this long? Is it that far?]

*Thanlangum vilangum – literally means criss-cross
