*Aalaapanam is a form of improvisation done in Carnatic classical music. The protagonist’s mother is a Carnatic singer and hence the reference to the classical song.
**Ponnum, thaenum vayambum (gold, honey and sweet flag) has a cultural significance for Malayalis. A mixture made of honey, sweet flag and grated gold is made and a drop is touched on newborn children’s tongues with the belief that their words will be sweet as honey.
