Angopangam

(Translation on request for RA)
Mangalassery Neelakantan, a wealthy heir, has squandered his wealth in many ways after his dad passed. Neelakantan lives in his ancestral home with his adviser Warrier who has known Neelan since he was a child. Neelan’s mom has left the house because of his wayward lifestyle which includes drinking every night with friends and patronizing local sex workers. His main entertainment is to cause various skirmishes to one up the members of Mundakkal, another rich landowner family in that area. Neelan decides to renew the art center in a temple his dad patronized. For the inauguration Warrier suggests inviting Bhanumati, a local girl in the village, for performing Bharatanatyam. Bhanumati, having recently completed her training in Kalamandalam, hopes to be a renowned dancer despite being financially disadvantaged. Her loving dad has a drinking problem and owes a lot of money to many people in the village. Neelan’s friends while on their way to invite Bhanu for the performance, carries her dad home from where he was lying down drunken on the road. Bhanu mistakenly thinks they are the ones who gave him drinks and humiliates them out of anger. Neelan talks to her dad in person next day, pretends he didn’t take offense and re-extends the invitation with an apology. On the day of the performance, Neelan forces Bhanu to dance in front of him instead of the temple’s art center as a payback. At the end of the dance, Bhanu is truly offended that her arangettam (first formal stage performance) is ruined by this cruel person and takes a harsh stand that she will not dance anymore. She throws her dancers’ anklets at Neelan’s feet and walks out. The movie Devaasuram (God-Demon), loosely based on the life of Mullassery Rajagopal and his wife Lekshmi, is a Malayali cult classic with Mohanlal as Neelan and Revathi as Bhanumati. Bhanumati who takes a stand for her self worth, is considered one of the strong portrayals of women in Malayalam cinema. This song plays as Bhanu dances in anger in front of Neelan and others.

Angopaangam swaramukharam druthachalanam
Aalum ee homaagniyil en janmame nee havyam aayi
[All my limbs are clamorous with swift movements
In this raging sacred fire, hey my birth, you became a sacrifice!]
Angopaangam swara mukharam drutha chalanam
Aalum ee homaagniyil en janmame nee havyam aayi
[All my limbs are clamorous with swift movements
In this raging sacred fire, hey my birth, you became a sacrifice!]

In this new court, please be kind to this dark girl singing in pain]

[Hey hateful music built up in the heart,
without realizing you changed to gandhara raaga]
Deva gandharva raaja poojitham naatya mandapam nee

[Hey dance court, worshipped by Gods, heavenly beings and kings alike
Are you becoming a stage for low lifes’ song and dance?]

Manassil vidarum ushassil katdina thamassu aayi irulil ivide idarave
angopaangam swara mukharam…
[In the dawn blossoming in the heart, deep darkness arrived, as I stagger here
all my limbs are clamorous!…]

Theliyaathe poliyunna thirinaalame

[Hey flame which extinguished as it was lighting
Hey my wishes which dries up like the Nila river]

[The ones which were contented listening to the melodious expressions, in my
ears, who is yelling these songs of curses?]
Manassil vidarum ushassil katdina thamassu aayi irulil ivide idarave
Manassil vidarum ushassil katdina thamassu aayi irulil ivide idarave
angopaangam swara mukharam!…
[In the dawn blossoming in the heart, deep darkness arrived, as I stagger here
all my limbs are clamorous!…]
