Vaanam chaayum, theeram thaarattum
Kaalam moolum, thaaram kaathorkkum
[The sky leans in, the shore sways it to sleep
The time hums, the star listens to it]
Alapol aval ennil vala neythoru swapnam
mizhi moodum ee neram, irul veeshum ee neram
[Like a wave, the dream she spun in me
at this time when the eyes are closed, the time when darkness sweeps in]
maayumo? maarumo? kaanal kaarmekham
[will it disappear? will it go away? (like a) dry rain cloud]

Vaanam chaayum, theeram thaarattum
Kaalam moolum, thaaram kaathorkkum
[The sky leans in, the shore sways it to sleep
The time hums, the star listens to it]

Raapalunkin thulli veena paayal puzhayil
Chaanju ulanja chandra bimbam thaane polinjo?
[In the algae covered river where a drop of night’s crystal fell
the scattered reflection of moon, did it die on its own?]
Naam thuzhanja neer kothimbin omal padiyil
nee paranja thaen kadhakal paade maranno?
[(Sitting) on the adorable board of the water canoe we paddled
all those sweet stories you told, did you forget them?]
Vili kelkkum engil, ponne, ini aethu dweepin konil
oru pole nammal chernnu paadum? aaaaaa….
[If you can hear my call, darling, in which island’s corner
will we sing together as one?…]

Vaanam chaayum, theeram thaarattum
Kaalam moolum, thaaram kaathorkkum
[The sky leans in, the shore sways it to sleep
The time hums, the star listens to it]

Aaliyaalum soorya thaapam meiyum karayil
kaattu erinja raathri mulla aare thiranju?
[On the shores where the sun’s heat grazes like a flashing fire
the night jasmine (fragrance) which the breeze blew, who did it search for?]
Neeri neerum orma veendum aere nirayum
deena deerkha yaatra poke njaanum karanju
[Filled with so many burning painful memories
(is) this never ending dejected journey, while going (on this) I cried too]
Thira kaenu cholli, melle, ini aethu janmam engo
oru pole nammal chernnu paadum? aaaaaa…
[The weeping wave asked, softly, in which birth somewhere
will we sing together as one?…]

Vaanam chaayum, theeram thaarattum
Kaalam moolum, thaaram kaathorkkum
[The sky leans in, the shore sways it to sleep
The time hums, the star listens to it]
