++Maavilakudil painkili…kokilakkili paadedi
Veendu kittiya poonguzhal mazhakaarnirakkili oothedi
[Hey mango leaf nested bird…hey song bird, please sing
This flute you found, hey rain cloud colored bird, please play]
Maavilakudil painkili…kili, kokilakkili paadedi
Veendu kittiya poonguzhal mazhakaarnirakkili oothedi
[Hey mango leaf nested bird…hey song bird, please sing
This flute you found, hey rain cloud colored bird, please play]
Thaazhvarayil kunju thennal thaalamidum nerathu
Aezhu swaram thotteduthu en nenjakathe kombathu
[When the little breeze keeps beats in the valley,
I also kept up with the seven notes* on my heart’s branch]

Ariyumo karimukil malayude maaril
panimazha aayi peytha paattu?
[Do you know…that rain cloud on the mountain’s bosom,
…the song with which it showered down as fragrant rain?]
Ariyumo karimukil malayude maaril
panimazha aayi peytha paattu?
[Do you know…that rain cloud on the mountain’s bosom,
…the song with which it showered down as fragrant rain?]
Manjumaala korkkum rithu sundariyude
priyan oru idayan aadya raagam oathunnoru paattum aekumo?
[The beautiful season who creates a necklace of fog,
will her dear shepherd give a song with the music?]

Thaazhvarayil kunju thennal thaalamidum nerathu
Aezhu swaram thotteduthu en nenjakathe kombathu
[When the little breeze keeps beats in the valley,
I also kept up with the seven notes* on my heart’s branch]

Kilukilum kalakalam aruvikal veendum
kolussukal charthunna paattu
[With chimes, the jingling streams flow again
making songs (as if they are) wearing anklets]
Kilukilum kalakalam aruvikal veendum
kolussukal charthunna paattu
[With chimes, the jingling streams flow again
making songs (as if they are) wearing anklets]
Orma aattiloode kadalassu thoni ozhuki ozhuki
baalya theeram ethunnoru paattum aekumo?
[Through the river of memory, will the floating paper boat
give me the song where it reaches the banks of childhood?]

Mm…
Aezhu swaram thotteduthu en nenjakathe kombathu
[I also kept up with the seven notes* on my heart’s branch]

*Seven notes of Indian classical music – Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni

++Painkili literally translates to parrot and kokilam literally translates to cuckoo. I opted to keep them generic for this translation.
