*Five elements of nature are earth, water, fire, air, and space.
**Irumudi or irumudi kettu is a two compartment pouch which the pilgrims carry on top of their head to Shabarimala. It contains items for pooja in one compartment and personal belongings in the other. The word irumudi is a combination of two words iru (double/two) and mudi (hair/crown of the head) when read together a two compartment bag on the crown/top of the head.
+ The history of Lord Ayyappan has different narratives. Some believe he was a tribal deity and later with the popularity of Bhrahmanism in Kerala, he was given a story of being the son of Hari-Hara (Lord Vishnu who became Mohini and Lord Shiva). The lyricist may be referring to this contrast in the first and second stanza by saying Ayyan is not an aryan ideology which follows conventions to restrict entry for young women in the temple, but the result of the penance of a tribal person, a dravidian.
