Pranaya Sandhya

(Translation on request for RG & RA)
Nathan, a celebrated social scientist and author lives in the same high rise apartment as Deepthi & Jayan, a middle class couple. Nathan helps Deepthi to get her sick son to a hospital and helps her out with money when Jayan was away. He also recommends Jayan for a job after his long unemployment at Deepthi’s request. Meanwhile Deepthi develops a strong attachment to Nathan and sleeps with him. Nathan has always been very upfront with Deepthi that he’s unavailable emotionally, but likes her for the comfort she provides. Deepthi finds it very disconcerting that Nathan doesn’t reciprocate her attachment. She feels she has committed a sin as their relationship is founded only on carnal feelings from Nathan’s side. This song is split in the movie with the refrain and first stanza playing right after she sleeps with him and is still enamored of him and the second plays after she finally gets he will always be unavailable to her. A song about intense longing and helplessness in unreciprocated love from the movie Ore Kadal.

Pranaya sandhya oru vin sooryante viraham ariyunnuvo?
Veruthe nenjil oru vaarthinkal thiriyum eriyunnuvo?
[Is the twilight of love feeling the loneliness of the sun?
For no reason, is a lamp wick of moon burning in the heart?]
Pular nilaavinte yamunayil chandrakaantham aliyunnuvo?
Kanavil aayiram kanaka megham kanal varaykkunnuvo?
[In the Yamuna river of moonbeams at dawn, is the moonstone dissolving?
In dreams are thousands of golden clouds drawing embers?]

Paattil, nin paattil, swara padmaraagangal thaedi
Nokkil nin nokkil mani mayilpeelikal choodi
[In your song, I searched for red sapphires* of music notes
In the looks you gave, I adorned in peacock feathers]
Anuraagilam aaya thapassil daladeepanjali aayi
Oru jalaraashiyil oru mazhamani aayi pozhiyaan varaam njaan
[In this meditation of love, I became a cluster of lamps in prayer
In an ocean, to fall like a drop of rain, I’ll come]

Pranaya sandhya oru vin sooryante viraham ariyunnuvo?
Veruthe nenjil oru vaarthinkal thiriyum eriyunnuvo?
[Is the twilight of love feeling the loneliness of the sun?
For no reason, is a lamp wick of moon burning in the heart?]

Kinaavinte kaana dweepil amaavasi raavil
nila thaaramaam en janmam kandilla Nee
[In the hidden island of dreams on a moonless night
my life as a moonlit star, you never noticed]
Aakasham irul moodumbol murivaelkkunnoru manassode
mazha nananja shalabham pole thirike yaathra aayi
[When the sky gets veiled in darkness, with a wounded heart
like a rain soaked butterfly, I turned back]

Pranaya sandhya oru vin sooryante viraham ariyunnuvo?
Veruthe nenjil oru vaarthinkal thiriyum eriyunnuvo?
[Is the twilight of love feeling the loneliness of the sun?
For no reason, is a lamp wick of moon burning in the heart?]
