Moovanthi Thazhvarayil

(Translation on request for SZ and GT)
Vishwanathan and Johnny, small time mobsters in Bombay, accidentally kills Damodaran who was threatening their lives. Vishwan retains Damodaran’s travel bag while running away from the scene and finds stolen valuables and letters from his sister in there. He decides to go to Damodaran’s hometown and help his family with the money from the stolen valuables. Damu’s family consist of his grandparents and three sisters. His middle sister Bhanu is the one who bears all the burden and keeps the family afloat with her spitfire personality and whatever little she makes with her family’s traditional job of smithy. She is very suspicious of Vishwan at first as they constantly suffer from unwanted male attention in the neighborhood. As time goes by, Vishwan falls for Bhanu and tries to tell her this through a kiss without her consent which she resists for a moment before giving in. A song which expresses Vishwan’s commitment to treasure Bhanu from the movie Kanmadam.

Moovanthi thaazhvarayil venthu urukum vin sooryan,
munnaazhi* chenkanal aayi nin ulayil veezhumbol,
[When the sun in the sky who melts in the valley of twilight,
falls into your forge as three measures of embers]
oru thari ponthari aayi nin hrudhayam neerunnu
[like a molten speck of gold your heart smolders]

Nilaavala kaiyaal ninne vilolam aayi thalodidaam
Nilaavala kaiyaal ninne vilolam aayi thalodidaam… aaraariram
[With a hand of wavy moonbeams, I’ll softly caress you]

Moovanthi thaazhvarayil venthu urukum vin sooryan,
munnaazhi chenkanal aayi nin ulayil veezhumbol,
[When the sun in the sky who melts in the valley of twilight,
falls into your forge as three measures of embers]

Irulum ee aekaantha raavil thiri idum vaarthinkal aakkaam
Manassile mankkoodin ullil mayangunna pon veena aakkaam
[In this darkening lonely night, I’ll make you a moon extending a wick of light
In the mud hut of my heart, I’ll make you a sleeping beautiful veena]
Oru mulam thandu aayi nin chundathe
novunna paattinte eenangal njaan aetu vaangaam
[As a bamboo shoot (flute) on your lips
I’ll transfer that painful song’s tunes to me]
Oru kulir tharaattu aayi nee vaarkkum kanneerin
kanaa poomuthellaam ennullil korkkaam
[As a comforting lullaby, of the tears you shed,
I’ll string all those hidden pearls together in me]

Moovanthi thaazhvarayil venthu urukum vin sooryan,
munnaazhi chenkanal aayi nin ulayil veezhumbol,
[When the sun in the sky who melts in the valley of twilight,
falls into your forge as three measures of embers]

+Kavilile kaanaa nilaavil kanavinte kasthuri chaarthaam
Mizhiyile shokaardra bhaavam madhurikkum sree raagam akkaam
[On your cheeks missing radiance, I’ll apply a kasthuri** paste of dreams
The expression of grief in your eyes, I’ll turn it into sweet music notes]
Eriveyil chaayum nin maadathin muttathe
mandaara kombathu manju aayi njaan maaraam
[In the yard of your hut where the burning sunlight slants
I’ll be the snow on that mandaaram tree branch]
Kinaavinte kunnikuruthola panthal menanjittu
mangalya thaaliyum chaarthaam
[Under a canopy woven with tender fronds of dreams
I’ll adorn the wedding pendant on you ]

Moovanthi thaazhvarayil venthu urukum vin sooryan,
munnaazhi* chenkanal aayi nin ulayil veezhumbol,
[When the sun in the sky who melts in the valley of twilight,
falls into your forge as three measures of embers]
oru thari ponthari aayi nin hrudhayam neerunnu
[like a molten speck of gold your heart smolders]

Nilaavala kaiyaal ninne vilolam aayi thalodidaam
Nilaavala kaiyaal ninne vilolam aayi thalodidaam… aaraariram
[With a hand of wavy moonbeams, I’ll softly caress you]

Moovanthi thaazhvarayil venthu urukum vin sooryan,
munnaazhi chenkanal aayi nin ulayil veezhumbol
[When the sun in the sky who melts in the valley of twilight,
falls into your forge as three measures of embers]
