Allimalar Kaavil

(Translation on request for AN)
Sethumadhavan lives in a joint family which includes his dad, sisters and his brother and their family. He plans to start a small business of baked goods and is desperately trying to get government approval for his business so that he can apply for a loan. Sulochana, his long time girlfriend, gives him an ultimatum to marry her. Sethu is mired in his issues and has no time for Sulu. After a heated argument with Sulu’s brother, they elope and marry in court. Sulu is happy to be wed to Sethu finally, but soon realizes that she is not a priority in his life. She is hugely disappointed that he is not romantic anymore like in the letters he used to write to her. She lives in an alternate world reminiscing about the past. A song about lost dreams from the movie Midhunam.

Allimalar kaavil pooram kaanaan,
annu nammal poyi raavil nilaavil
[To watch pooram festival in Allimalar grove
we went together on that moonlit night]
Doore oru aalmarachottil irunnu,
maarivil gopura maalika theerthu
[Far away, we sat by the roots of a peepal tree,
and made a mansion with a rainbow tower]
Athil naam onnu aayi aadi paadi
[We sang and danced together in that]

Allimalar kaavil pooram kaanaan
annu nammal poyi raavil nilaavil
[To watch pooram festival in Allimalar grove
we went together on that moonlit night]

Oru pon maanine thaedi naam paanju, kaathara mohangal kanneeril maanju
Mazhavillin manimeda oru kaatil veenu
[We chased after a golden deer*, our fickle desires dissolved in tears
The beautiful home of rainbow fell in a windstorm]
Mannile kali veedum maanjuvo
Innu athum madhuram oru orma aayi
[Did the playhouse on the earth also disappear?
It has become a sweet memory today]
Mannile kali veedum maanjuvo
Innu athum madhuram oru orma aayi
[Did the playhouse on the earth also disappear?
It has become a sweet memory today]
Marubhoovil undo madhumaasa theertham?
[Is there a sweet spring in the desert?]

Allimalar kaavil pooram kaanaan
annu nammal poyi raavil nilaavil
[To watch pooram festival in Allimalar grove
we went together on that moonlit night]

Veruthe sooryane dhyaanikkum aetho paathiraa poovinte nombaram pole
oru kaatil aliyunna hrudhayaardhra geetham
[Like the pain of some midnight flower meditating about the sun in vain,
a touching song disseminates in a breeze]
Pinneyum chirikkunnu poovukal
mannil ee vasanthathin dhoothikal
[The flowers are smiling again
like messengers of Spring on the earth]
Pinneyum chirikkunnu poovukal
mannil ee vasanthathin dhoothikal
[The flowers are smiling again
like messengers of Spring on the earth]
Rithu shobha aake oru kunju poovil
[The glow of seasons across a small flower]

Allimalar kaavil pooram kaanaan,
annu nammal poyi raavil nilaavil
[To watch pooram festival in Allimalar grove
we went together on that moonlit night]
Doore oru aalmarachottil irunnu,
maarivil gopura maalika theerthu
[Far away, we sat by the roots of a peepal tree,
and made a mansion with a rainbow tower]
Athil naam onnu aayi aadi paadi
[We sang and danced together in that]

Allimalar kaavil pooram kaanaan,
annu nammal poyi raavil nilaavil
[To watch pooram festival in Allimalar grove
we went together on that moonlit night]

*Here the golden deer represents unattainable dreams. This is a reference to the story of Mareechan the demon transformed as a golden deer who enticed Sita in the epic Ramayana.
