Puttu is a traditional food item usually eaten as breakfast in Kerala. You can eat it mixed with sweet sides like banana/sugar and ghee or with savory sides like moong dal curry and pappadam/kadala(chickpeas) curry/fish curry/meat curry. It is a tasty steamed vehicle of rice flour to hold your sides. I used to hate it while growing up, but now I’m a fan of my own multi-grain version – a mixture of red rice, oats and ragi flours. If you are interested in making puttu, recipes are available on google. The secret key to making soft puttu is patience. You should take your time mixing it. Adding water into the flour bit by bit and mixing it with your finger tips to break down hard lumps into wet sand like texture, while also making sure it can stick together enough to be steamed and made into a long cylindrical cake or a small bowl like cake in the puttu molds.
Here Thakara, the Malayalam rock band, is calling out the socio-economic disparity in the society with references to some events which happened in Kerala[1]. The lyrics are asking why do we need too much wealth when we have puttu to satisfy our hunger.

Panavum prathaapavum namukku enthina?,
puttu undallo, puttin podi undallo!
[Why do we need money and prestige?
when we have puttu and puttu powder!]
Panavum prathaapavum namukku enthina?,
puttu undallo, puttin podi undallo!
[Why do we need money and prestige?
when we have puttu and puttu powder!]
Va va putte va, puttinte podiye va…
Va va putte va, puttu undengil pinnentha!…
[Come puttu come, come puttu powder…
Come puttu come, if we have puttu then why do we need anything else!]
Kaashu ullavan hummeru vaangumbol
Kaashu illathon idi kondu marikkunnu
[When the rich buy Hummer
The poor get hit by it and die]
Panam ullavan maalika paniyumbol
Paavangalo paaravu irikkunnu
[When the wealthy construct mansions
The deprived end up being their watchmen]
Va va putte va, puttinte podiye va…
Va va putte va, puttu undengil pinnentha!…
[Come puttu come, come puttu powder…
Come puttu come, if we have puttu then why do we need anything else!]
Panavum prathaapavum alla ellam, ullinte ullil nanma venam
Kolayum kalaapavum namukku enthina?
[Money and prestige is not everything, we should have goodness in our hearts and soul
Why do we need these murders and revolts?]
Panavum prathaapavum alla ellam, ullinte ullil nanma venam
Kolayum kalaapavum namukku enthina?
[Money and prestige is not everything, we should have goodness in our hearts and soul
Why do we need these murders and revolts?]
Puttu undallo.. vishappu adakkaan
Puttu undallo.. pinnenthina?..
[We have puttu to satisfy hunger
We have puttu… then why?]
Va va putte va, puttinte podiye va…
Va va putte va, puttu undengil pinnentha!…
[Come puttu come, come puttu powder…
Come puttu come, if we have puttu then why do we need anything else!]
