Subarkkathin anuraagam aayi

[Like a romance from heaven
the groom of love is arriving]

Madhu chandrika poloru pennu
Manimeen aayi thullana kannu
[A girl like the beautiful moon
Her eyes dancing like pretty fishes]
Puthu maarane orthathu kondu
ida nenjilu moolana vandu
[When she thought of the groom
a beetle hums in her heart]
Kasavani chaelode libaas aninje
Husunul Jamal aayi chamanja penne
[Wearing clothes with  beautiful golden weaves
hey girl, who is adorned like Husnul Jamal*]

Manassin ul ul thaalam
kolussil chil chil chil
[Beats of the heart
make the anklets jingle]
Ishalin thaen thaen eenam
chuvadil dhil dhil dhil
[The sweet tunes of songs
make the feet dance]

Madhu chandrika poloru pennu
Manimeen aayi thullana kannu
[A girl like the beautiful moon
Her eyes dancing like pretty fishes]
Puthu maarane orthathu kondu

[When she thought of the groom
a beetle hums in her heart]

Rasa kisakal chol, chol, chol

[Tell funny stories
while he comes near, in the ears]
Maniyarayil nee, nee, nee

[In the bridal chamber, you
should blossom like an intoxicating flower]
Ahad avanu oudh aayi krupa chorinje,
parasparam rooh aale inakkiyille?
[God showered grace on him like fragrance,
weren’t they brought together as one soul?]
Nishayithu kozhiyumbol iru udal oru kanavu aayi…mmmaaa
[When the night ends, they become a single dream in two bodies]

Manassin ul ul thaalam

Iru chodiyil chem chem chem
niram ezhuthi ee naanam
[On the pair of lips, coloring red
this shyness]
Kanavukalil nee nee nee

[In the dreams, are you
flying like a bird?]
Iham oru jannathu aayi orungiyille?
Nilavani pallakkil varunnu maaran
[Didn’t this world dress up like heaven?
(for) the groom arriving on a moonlit palanquin]
Puthukaachi thattam ittu karam kotti kali chiri aayi…mmmaaa
[Wearing a new veil, clapping and laughing with playfulness]

*Husnul Jamal is a character from the epic love story/poem ‘Badarul Muneer – Husnul Jamal’ written by Moyinkutty Vaidyar, a great poet and Ayurvedic medical practitioner who lived in 19th century Kerala. He is said to have written it based on real incidents narrated by visiting merchants, of a Persian princess falling in love with the minister’s son.(ref: Research paper pg:262) It was kind of revolutionary at the time. To quote M.N. Karassery, a writer- “It is one of the first texts in which a woman comes as a central character. You should remember that this book was published in 1872. Vaidyar was questioned by the elders of the community at Kondotty Pazhaya Palli (mosque), because he used the theme of ‘love’ in his work.” (ref: Arabi Malayalam: In conversation with M.N. Karassery)

    1. I’m just busy buddy. Different holidays and vacations coming up. No thinking time for translation. I’ll update when I get some translations in the pipeline.
