Cheru punchiri innale ithal vaadi veenoru paathayil
mizhikal thirayunnuvo kaalppaadukal veendum?
[On the path where the small smile wilted and fell,
are the eyes searching for footprints again?]
Aelam kaattu enthe nenjoram kulir ithiri pakaraathe
ee vazhiyoram vannu innu engo maayunnu?
[The cardamom scented breeze, without giving even a bit of chill(solace) to my heart
why does it came to the edge of this path and disappear somewhere?]

Tarivalayude kilukilum thedum kaathil aetho
kanneer poo veezhum nertha naadam ketto?
[The ears which strained to hear the jingling of the glass bangles,
did they catch the light sound of tears falling instead?]
Idavazhikalil evideyo veendum chellum neram
ilam mullu kollum orma neerunnu
[In the bylanes somewhere, when I went again
a soft thorny memory pricked me]
Theeraa mounam eerathandil ullil cherthu
aashaa naalam thaazhunnallo pakalodu othu
[Embracing the eternal silence on the bamboo shoot (flute) inside
the ray of hope seems to be going down with the day(sun)]
Mukham aekuvaan madi thonniyo nirathinkal melle vaathil chaarunnu?
[Reluctant to even give face, is the full moon closing the door?]

Ilamazhayude thullikal thanam aekaan vannu ennalum
vilippadu* doore peythu vegam maanjo?
[Even when the light rain’s drops came to offer chill
did it shower at a short distance and disappear too soon?]
Veyilodu thazhukumbozhum thoomanju innu enthe munnil
maayathe moodal neythu nilkkunnu?
[Even when the sunlight caresses, why is the fog before me
weaving a veil without going away?]
Orkkathe ethum venal thoovum thee choodathu
pookkal thorum vatti poyo poonthaen muthu?
[In this blazing heat brought by the summer without notice
did the drops of nectar dry up in all these flowers?]
Marayunnuvo malar maasame vida chollathe aetho kaana doorathu?
[Are you disappearing, hey spring, without saying goodbye to a distance?]

Cheru punchiri innale ithal vaadi veenoru paathayil
mizhikal thirayunnuvo kaalppaadukal veendum?
[On the path where the small smile wilted and fell,
are the eyes searching for footprints again?]
Aelam kaattu enthe nenjoram kulir ithiri pakaraathe
ee vazhiyoram vannu innu engo maayunnu
[The cardamom scented breeze, without giving even a bit of chill(solace) to my heart
why does it came to the edge of this path and disappear somewhere?]

*Vilippadu is a coloquial term for a short distance. It literally means ‘the distance where you can hear someone calling you’.
