Such poetic lines describing rain from the movie 18am padi. I found it hard to rightly capture the beauty of these verses. This expression of mazha(rain) below can only be experienced if you have grown up in Kerala or spend extensive time in Kerala during monsoons.

Mazhayodu chernnu njan ninnu
[I leaned close to the rain]
Oru vela manassil undu eppozhum aa chilambal
Mazhapoykayil veezhum sukhamulla varshathin thottu thalodalum kulir ormayum!
[Perhaps that chiming (of rain) still stays in my mind
And the caressing pleasant recollection of the comforting showers falling in the rain pond!]

[It is as if the thousands of smiling stars in the sky have blinked and said something
And in the jungle of slowly falling petals of moonlight, the music is fading]

+ In my parents’ childhood, they used to write on black slate tabs with white chalk instead of paper notebooks in their elementary schools. So imagine these lines like that. “The letters made by white clouds were given a black shade” is referring to the white clouds turning into darker rain clouds.
* Mashithandu – Mashithandu is a plant which used to be found everywhere in Kerala those days and it produces a clear sap. This sap is used to erase the chalk letters on the slate tab. So the kids used to pluck these when they needed to erase the slate.
