Cherukadha Pole

(Translation on request for MM)
Majeed, a financially struggling local football team owner, brings home Samuel, a Nigerian player in his team after he suffers an injury. They exchange their life stories while Samuel is recuperating in Majeed’s home which also houses his loving mom. Samuel finds out that his grandmother who raised him has passed away in Nigeria. Majeed and his mom hold prayer meetings which is as much a prayer for the departed soul as it is for Samuel who is newly orphaned by his grandmother’s death.

Cherukadha pole janmam
churul azhiyunnathu engo, ariyaathe
[Like a short story, this life
is unwinding somewhere, without knowing]
Alayana yatheeminu aayi…
[For this wandering orphan…]
pakaroo, thiri aayi, duniyaavin praarthana
vazhi thaedaan, doore chiraku aeri pokaan aayi
[please share, this world’s prayers as a light
to search for paths, to help him take flight to greater distances]

Dua* cholli (dua cholli), oru koottil naam ithaa
kadal olam (kanal aeki), izha cherunne novukal
[Uttering prayers (uttering prayers), here we are in this same nest
As much to fill an ocean (giving burning embers), are weaving, the pain too]
(Dua cholli….mmmm)
[Uttering prayers…]

Varum varum prabhaatham, vidarnnidum puthiya oru dalam
varoo niraasha koodaathe
[It will come, it will come, the dawn, a new petal will open
(you) come this way without any frustrations]
Nirappeeliyaale, swapnam varachitta chithram pol
vazhithaara mannil undaamo? (oooo…)
[With a colorful feather, like a picture painted by a dream
will a path exist on this earth?]
Iruttin thuruthil ninnum namukku onnu chaekkeraan
virichitta vaanam aethaano?
[From this grove of darkness, for us to perch
will there be a spread of sky?]
