Aaradanathu aarane? aakasha koodaane
[This chariot is raising dust, this chariot of festivities
Who is being bathed here? it is a group in the sky]
Ithile varum ee madhuchandrikaye
Ivaril ini nin madhuram mathiye
[Coming this way, hey sweet moon
In them, we only need the sweetness you provide]

Kannadi maanathu ammanam aadaan

[On the mirror like clear sky, to swing
why aren’t you going, hey myna bird?]
++Thambrante kayyeennu enthaanu penne
ponnada vaangaan vayyathedi?
[From the landlord’s hand, why aren’t you girl
ready to get the gift of new clothes?]

Podi paarana theraane, aakhosha thaeraane

[This chariot is raising dust, this chariot of festivities
Who is being bathed here?…]

Oru naadan maadapraavo ival ee pennu?
[Over the fields of millet, flying and crooning
is it the country dove, this girl?]
+++++ These two lines are only in the extended version
(aha)Para niraye ari nirayende?(aha) Arike oru chiri viriyende?(aha)

[Shouldn’t the bushel fill with rice grains?, Shouldn’t the smile blossom near by?
Coming to play with us, a bird, this girl!]
+++++
Ini naadaake nee aane, neru aanenne!
Thari novo ninnil veezhaathe nokkam enne!
[Now all over this place is you, it is true!
Without even a bit of pain falling on you, we will look after you!]

Ivaril ini nin madhuram mathiye
[Coming this way, hey sweet moon
In them, we only need the sweetness you provide]

[We are the wild kids who came to give a bath in songs
About all the antics we did, who got hopping mad thinking of that?]
Aattinakkare kaattil ninnoru nottam vittoru pennaalkku
notebook-inte aettil angattu neetti thannathu kathaane
[Across the river, from inside the woods, for the girl who sent us looks
in the pages of notebook, the one we extended was a (love)letter]

[Like the times when the battle thickened, or the time when the hits were given
the swords and battery, let’s give them up!]
+++++ These two lines are only in the extended version
(aha)Pathivaayi pala idam alayum(aha) gathi kitta pretham polum(aha)

[Wanders in many places, that ghost who hasn’t found peace
retires comfortably to a heaven, that is here!]
+++++
Ini naattarum veettarum koottaanenne
Kudamaattam* kaanan aiyyayya maattu aerunne
[Now all the neighbors has come together with (our) family
To watch the kudamaattam has become even more beautiful]
Madiya…thadiya…ithile varika
Ivida, ivida, podi paariduka!
[Hey lazy bum… hey fatso… come this way
It is here, it is here, the dust flies! (where the action is)]

Thankappan aatte, Ponnappan aatte, Innachan aatte vannekkeda!
Chendakku vende mandakku oru olam, pandu itta thaalam dindakkada!
[Whether it is Thankappan, Ponnappan or Innachan(doesn’t matter), all may come!
The drum needs some fun on top, (let it be) the beat created long back – dindakkada!]

+Aaraattu is a ceremonious bath given to the deity at the end of a Hindu festival. The presence of chariot and ceremonial bathing in first two lines indicate a festival or celebration.
++This is referring to another practice in the feudalistic age in Kerala. During festivities, the landlords5 would give out gifts, usually a piece of new cloth to everyone working for them.
*Kudamaattam literally translates to switching out umbrellas. This is one of the main events in Thrissur pooram, a major festival in Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur, Kerala. The event involves people/mahouts switching out various colorful umbrellas while sitting on top of a row of elephants.(YouTube Link [Warning: very loud])
