+Thozhuthu amarnnu valatthu vechu vetti
Idathu keri kuthichu chaadi
[With a prayer pose, crouch and cut on the right
Jump up high on the left]
Simhathanjam pidichu
Mattaande maaril kandu neetti
[Make a lion pose
and go for the opponent’s chest]
Valapuraye thirinjhu chaadi
Gaja vadivil amarnnu
[Jump back on right
Crouch in an elephant pose]

Kalari adavum chuvadin azhakum kandu njaan,
ee Chera* naadin veeranil
[I saw the Kalari forms and the beauty in steps
in this brave soldier of Chera province]
Mizhiyil nurayum kanavin chashakam thaedi njaan,
marimaayakkaari nin chaare
[The chalice of foaming dreams in your eyes, I searched
hey (playfully)deceitful one, staying close to you]

En oathu kithaabil**…nin peru engum kandilla…
[In my spelling book, I did not see your name]
Ul poovile naru jaalakam
Njaan ninakku maathram aayi thurakkaam
[The window of my heart
I’ll open just for you]
Uyir valliyil puthu ninavukal
ishal alakal choodi itha
[On the vines of life, new dreams
are getting adorned with waves of melodies]

Ini en vazhithaarayil, neehaaram aayi
aalolam aayi ninnu nee, Jaanaki…
Ini en vazhithaarayil, neehaaram aayi
aalolam aayi ninnu nee, Jaanaki…
[Now on my path, like dew drops
gently you stayed, Jaanaki]

Kalari adavum chuvadin azhakum kandu njaan
ee Chera naadin veeranil
[I saw the Kalari forms and the beauty in steps
in this brave soldier of Chera province]

++Kanaka mayilaanji kayyil illa
Surumayaal kanthadam thudichathu illa
[There is no golden mehendi on your hands
Your eyes are not alive with suruma(eyeliner)]
Muthani adhara poochendil
oppana paattukal illa…ho
[On your flowery pearl like lips
there are no oppana*** songs]
Kalivaakkin sharam aettu en, manakoodin thazhu thakarnne!
Ariyu nee mama thozhi, nin aathma sourabhyam aanu ente lahari
[Your playful words struck like arrows and broke down my heart’s cage’s lock
Please know, my love, your fragrant soul is my intoxication]

Ini en vazhithaarayil, neehaaram aayi
aalolam aayi ninnu nee, Jaanaki…
Ini en vazhithaarayil, neehaaram aayi

Naaga vadivu ottha meykkaruthaal en
thaarunya thalirukal iruthu eduthu
[With your snake like lithe strong body, my
youthful buds, you picked]
Ellu enna manamolum kaiyaal…
Othirapayatti enne veezhthi… hoy
[With your hands fragrant with sesame oil
you made me fall for you with your martial arts moves]
Kalamaane, maniveene, en anga thodukuri nee
Kothi aere manam aake, thoovelli thira aayi punaraan
[Hey doe, hey beautiful veena, you are my war paint
My heart longs to embrace you as a silver wave]

+These lines refer to steps in Kalari, a Kerala martial arts form.
*Chera is a kingdom which existed in Northern Kerala.
**Oathu kithaab – This is the Arabic spelling book Muslims learn from when they learn to pray in Kerala.
++ These four lines probably refer to the girl not being a Muslim.
***Oppana is the Islamic traditional song/dance played in Kerala for a bride by other women before the wedding.
