Thaniye

(Translation on request for MJ. Also for EK, here is your wedding gift. 😉 )
Michael aka Guppy lives with his paraplegic mom in a village. He is the sole supporter of the family as his dad passed away when he was a child. He is very enterprising and makes money by selling ornamental fishes, especially guppy and hence his nickname. Guppy saves up money for buying a wheelchair for his mom. Thaniye is a slow melody with a cautiously hopeful undertone rendered beautifully by Sooraj Santhosh of the Masala Coffee band.

Thaniye mizhikal thulumbiyo?
Veruthe mozhikal vithumbiyo?
[Did the eyes(tears) spill on its own?
Did the words weep without a reason?]

Manju aerum vinnoram, mazha maayum pole
Kunju omal kannoram, kanneerum maayenam
[In the foggy sky, like when the rain recedes
In (your) small adorable eyes, the tears should recede too]
Nenchoram, ponnolam chelaerum kanavukalum oru pidi…
kaavalaayi vazhi thaedanam, oru maarivil chiraku aeranam,
[In your heart, with a handful of dreams (which are) bright as gold,
on vigil, you should search for your path, climb on a rainbow’s wing,]
aasha than thaeru ithil, parannu vaanil nee uyaranam
[on this chariot of wishes, you should fly up in the sky]
Idanenchile murivu aaranam, iru kannilum mizhiveranam
Nanmakal pookkum ee pulari thaedi nee ozhukanam
[The wound in your heart should heal, your eyes should become bright
Searching for this new daybreak where goodness blossoms, you should flow]

Akathaaril ee, cheru thaengal maanjidum
Thiri neettum* ee kulir ormmakal thirike varum
[In the heart, this, small weep(pain) will disappear
Extending hope, these pleasant memories will return]
Iravu aakave, pakal aakave,
kavilatthu ninte ee chiri kaathidaan
[On nights, and days,
to keep the smile on your cheeks,]
ithu vazhi njaan thuna aayi varaam,
Ini ennume kuda neerthidaam,
[I’ll come by this way as a friend
I’ll hold an umbrella always,]
thanal aekidaam, oru nalla neram…
varavettidaam
[to give (you) shade(shelter), a better time(future)…
(we will) welcome]

Kunju omal kannoram, kanneerum maayenam
[In (your) small beautiful eyes, the tears should recede]
Nenchoram, ponnolam chelaerum kanavukalum oru pidi…
kaavalaayi vazhi thaedanam, oru maarivil chiraku aeranam,
[In your heart, with a handful of dreams (which are) bright as gold,
on vigil you should search for your path, climb on a rainbow’s wing,]
aasha than thaeru ithil, parannu vaanil nee uyaranam
[on the chariot of wishes, you should fly up in the sky]
Idanenchile murivu aaranam, iru kannilum mizhiveranam
Nanmakal pookkum ee pulari thaedi nee ozhukanam
[The wound in your heart should heal, your eyes should become bright
Searching for this new daybreak where goodness blossoms, you should flow]
