Maavin chottile manam ulla madhuram aayi
manathaaril kulirunnu en baalyam
[Like a fragrant sweetness under the mango tree
my childhood gives a pleasant chill in my heart]
Aaro neettiya mashithandin kulirilulla
Thalir orma aanu ente baalyam
[The comforting coldness of the mashithandu* offered by someone…
(like that,) the soft memory is my childhood]
Cheli mannil paavada chaayam thekkum
[In the mud, the skirt draws a picture]
Athu kaane kaliyaakkum ilanaambukal…
kaliyaadunna paadathe kathir orma baalyam
[The tiny leaf stalks, teasing seeing that…
the childhood is a small memory which plays along with these stalks in the field]
Maavin chottile manam ulla madhuram aayi
manathaaril kulirunnu en baalyam
[Like a fragrant sweetness under the mango tree
my childhood gives a pleasant chill in my heart]
Aaro neettiya mashithandin kulirilulla
thalir orma aanu ente baalyam
[The comforting coldness of the mashithandu* offered by someone…
(like that,) the soft memory is my childhood]
Kali vaakku cholliya kalikoottukaariye karayichathu aarum marannu
Athin sukhamulla novum marannu
[You forgot how you made your (girl) friend cry when she teased you
Also the slightly enjoyable pain you felt (when you made her cry)]
Nuna paranju eppozho njaarapazham thinna pothiyum nilaavum maranju
Kaavil kiliyum kinaavum mayangi
[The covering moonlight who lied and ate the njarapazham fruit disappeared
And in the grove, the bird and dreams fell asleep]
Niravaarnna sandhya maanju, mazhayulla ratri poyi
Niravaarnna sandhya maanju, mazhayulla ratri poyi
[The full dusk disappeared, so did the rainy night]
Innum marayaatha mazha orma en baalyam
[A prominent rainy memory even today, my childhood]
Maavin chottile manam ulla madhuram aayi
manathaaril kulirunnu en baalyam
[Like a fragrant sweetness under the mango tree
my childhood gives a pleasant chill in my heart]
Aaro neettiya mashithandin kulirilulla
thalir orma aanu ente baalyam
[The comforting coldness of the mashithandu* offered by someone…
(like that,) the soft memory is my childhood]
Pakaline snehichu kothi theeraathe oru poovu padinjaaru nokki karanju
Aval mukham onnu uyarthathe ninnu
[A flower, who loved the sun insatiably, wept facing the West (when the sun set)
She refused to raise her face]
Pakaline snehichu kothi theeraathe oru poovu padinjaaru nokki karanju
Aval paathi mayakkathil ninnu
[A flower, who loved the sun insatiably, wept facing the West (when the sun set)
She stood there half awake]
Oru kaattu mey thalodi, ariyathe paattu mooli
Oru kaattu mey thalodi, ariyathe paattu mooli
[A breeze caressed the body and hummed a song unknowingly]
Athil aliyaatha veyil orma, en baalyam
[In that, a non-dissolving sunlit (bright) memory, my childhood]
Maavin chottile manam ulla madhuram aayi
manathaaril kulirunnu en baalyam
[Like a fragrant sweetness under the mango tree
my childhood gives a pleasant chill in my heart]
Aaro neettiya mashithandin kulirilulla
thalir orma aanu ente baalyam
[The comforting coldness of the mashithandu* offered by someone…
(like that,) the soft memory is my childhood]
Cheli mannil paavada chaayam thekkum
[In the mud, the skirt draws a picture]
Athu kaane kaliyaakkum ilanaambukal…
kaliyaadunna paadathe kathir orma baalyam
[The tiny leaf stalks, teasing seeing that…
the childhood is a small memory which plays along with these stalks in the field]
*Mashithandu is a plant native to Kerala. In olden times, children used slate tabs and chalk for writing in school, instead of notebooks. This plant has fluid/water inside which is used to erase chalk letters written on slates. So this is basically an eco-friendly eraser which used to grow like weeds everywhere.
