Nilamanaltharikalil

(Translation on request for SY)
Irfan and Anitha become close while he is helping her with her research materials for her PhD. I feel Rafeeq Ahamed is the best out there in lyrics nowadays. Notice the first 4 lines in the second and third stanza. It speaks to the listener about how the personal experiences of the protagonists as a Hindu woman and Muslim man, translates into their feelings.

Nilamanaltharikalil, nira nila raavukal
pularikal sandhyakal, mathivara thaalam aayi
[On the sands of Nila(river), the full moon nights
and dawns and dusks, with insatiable beats…]
Thelineer aaduvaan varum ee thozhikal
Avarodu orumichu alayan, poyidaam…
[to bathe in these waters, are coming these friends
Let us go and wander together with them]
Hooo hooo oooh…Hooo hooo oooh..Hooo hooo oooh…ooo ooo
Hooo hooo oooh…Hooo hooo oooh..Hooo hooo oooh…oo oooo

Azhimukham kaanum neram, puzhayude vegam pole
hridayavum thulli thulli, priya mukham thedi mookam
[When it reaches the estuary, like how the river speeds up,
my heart leaps and silently searches for a dear face]
Thrikkaavil aadyam pookkum thrithaavu* pole en ullil,
vishvaasa sourabhayathil mungunnu oru omal swapnam
[Like the holy basil which flowers first in a sacred grove, in my soul
with the fragrance of faith, is dipping, an adorable dream]
Vannu odi melle thottu pinnottu neengi,
konchathe konchum neeraazhi
[Came running, slowly touched and then receded
endearingly flirting, this ocean (wave on the beach)]

Maniminaarangalkkullil kurukidum praavin nenjil
Ishalukal pookkum neram, panimathi vannu mele
[In the heart of the crooning dove which lives in beautiful towers
when songs blossom, the moon came out above]
Muthodu muthum chaarthi, ponthattam** ittu en kaathil
Susmera aayi melle, moovanthi enthe cholli?
[Wearing a golden veil with pearly tassels, in my ears
smiling slowly, what did the twilight whisper?]
Orkkathe orungaathe aetho novinte mounam
mindathe poorum kaatin koode onnu chernnuvo?
[(Sprung) without a warning or preparedness, this (new) pain’s silence
did it join the quiet breeze which comes along with us?]

Nilamanaltharikalil, nira nila raavukal
pularikal sandhyakal, mathivara thaalam aayi
[On the sands of Nila(river), the full moon nights
and dawns and dusks, with insatiable beats…]
Thelineer aaduvaan varum ee thozhikal
Avarodu orumichu alayan, poyidaam…
[to bathe in these waters, are coming these friends
Let us go and wander together with them]
Aadiyum, paadiyum, raakkilikal aavaam
Raagavum thaalavum pole aliyaam
[Dancing, singing, let us be night birds
Like music and beats let us wander]

Hooo hooo oooh…Hooo hooo oooh..Hooo hooo oooh…ooo ooo
Hooo hooo oooh…Hooo hooo oooh..Hooo hooo oooh…oo oooo

*Thrithaavu (Thulasi) is the holy basil grown in sacred places in Hinduism, especially in small groves (kaavu) which acts as private places of worship for families.
**Thattam is the veil Muslim women wear to cover their heads in Kerala. Usually it is the dupatta which goes along with the clothes they are wearing and sometimes hijabs are also referred to as thattam.
