Kannoram Chingaaram

(Translation on request for RA)
Pappu, a teenager staying at his maternal home while awaiting his high school results, is taken by the beauty of Rathi, an older woman in the neighborhood. The movie is a remake of a 1978 Bharathan movie by the same name based on Padmarajan’s story. This song is like O-La-La, but at a much much higher plane, elevated by the beautiful lyrics by Murugan Kattakada. This is Shreya at her best. I cannot fathom how she, being a non-Malayali, brings the wanton sensuousness these lines call for.

Kannoram
chingaaram
[Before my eyes
Wooing]
Kannoram chingaaram
Ee poovil vannu vandu moolave
[Before my eyes, (I see) wooing
When the beetle comes and hums next to this flower]

Kaathoram
Kinnaram
[In my ears
Sweet nothings]
Kaathoram kinnaram
Ee kaattil aadum eera moolave
[In my ears, (I hear) sweet nothings
When the bamboo hums while it sways in this wind]

Ee nenjile saaverikal,
peythu thorum indraneela raavu aayi
[The saveri raaga in my heart,
has become the rain drenched sapphire blue night]

Kannoram (Kannoram)
chingaaram (chingaaram)
[Before my eyes (before my eyes)
Wooing (wooing)]
Kannoram chingaaram
Ee poovil vannu vandu moolave
[Before my eyes, (I see) wooing
When the beetle comes and hums next to this flower]

Kaattinte kayyil venthooval pole
thaazhvaaram aake parannalanju (parannalanju)
[In the hands of the breeze, like a white feather
through the whole valley, I floated (floated)]
Varnangal aezhum chaalicha moham
onnaayi maaril alinju chernnu
[The wish mixed in with the seven colors
became one and dissolved into my heart]
Oru maarivil thumbi aayi, theliyunnu romaharsham
Oru raamazha thulli aayi, kulirunnu ninte sneham
[Like a rainbow (colorful) dragonfly, are the rising goosebumps
Like a drop of night rain, your love gives me chills]
Athinaayi njan, alayunnu, pala janmam!
[For that I, wander, many lives!]

Kannoram (Kannoram)
chingaaram (chingaaram)
[Before my eyes (before my eyes)
Wooing (wooing)]
Ee poovil vannu vannu moolave
[When the beetle comes and hums next to this flower]

Eeran nilaavayi nee vanna neram,
neeraambal aayi njan nananju ninnu
[When you came as the moist moonlight,
like a wet water lily, I stood]
Hey, Naanam marannu naam onnu chernnu,
neehara megham thudichu ninnu
[Hey, shedding the shyness, we became one
the misty cloud stood shivering]
Rathi raasa lolayaayi, oru rathri manjil maanju
Athilolam aathmaraagam, parirambhanam nukarnnu
[With lustful fragility, a night disappeared in the fog
This soft raaga of the soul, drank in the embrace]
Palanaalum thirayunnu madhagandham!
[Searching many days, for this intoxicating scent!]

Kaathoram (kaathoram)
kinnaram (kinnaram)
[In my ears (In my ears)
Sweet nothings (Sweet nothings)]
Kannoram chingaaram
Ee kaattil aadum eera moolave
[Before my eyes, (I see) wooing
When the bamboo hums while it sways in this wind]
Ee nenjile saaverikal,
peythu thorum indraneela raavu aayi
[The saveri raaga in my heart,
has become the rain drenched sapphire blue night]
