Doore Doore

Mathukutty who grew up as a boy on the outside, starts a new life as Marykutty, a woman.

I loved the hopeful lyrics which captures a blossoming life. Jayasurya makes a really pretty and dignified Marykutty in this song – a refreshing change from how a transperson is generally portrayed onscreen. I had loved his experimental movie ‘Su Su Sudhi Vatmeekam’, hope this one does good too. Also kudos to Adwaith for taking up Mathukutty’s childhood role in that song. As a parent, I can only imagine the amount of deliberation the family must have gone through picking such a role for your child, when we live in a judgmental society where any slightly “girlish” quality in a boy (and vice versa) is strongly mocked.

Doore doore, ithal viriyaanoru
swapnam kaathu nilkkunnu
[Far away, to open its petals
a dream is waiting]
Jaalakam thurakkum, kaatiloode akale…
kandu, thiri neetti, malar thookum punchiri minnayam
[Opens the window, the wind and through that at a distance
saw, (cautiously)extending a flame, a beautiful flash of a smile]
Enno, ini enno, ithal choodum nalloru pookaalam
[Sometime soon (we hope), will bloom a pretty spring]

Aaro viral thottu naalinte thaalile
chaayam alinju pokunnu
[With a touch of someone’s finger, on the pages of days
the colors keep smudging]
Virasangal engilum athil aake maanasam
sooryodayam thirayunnu
[Even when they(days) move listlessly, my mind
searches for the rising sun]
Kilivaathilil kelkkunnuvo
aetho pularppakshi paadum swaram
[Through the small window, am I hearing
some morning bird’s voice, singing?]

Doore doore, ithal viriyaanoru
swapnam kaathu nilkkunnu
[Far away, to open its petals
a dream is waiting]

Erivenal theerkkunna kai kondu rithu onnu
pookkalavum rachikkunnu
[With its hand which forms burning summers, the season,
creates springs too]
Kadha onnum ariyaathe viriyenda thoomalar
manjil mayangi nilkkunnu
[Without knowing any of this, the little flower bud who should be opening
stays sleepy in the fog]
Manam aakave, nirayunnuvo
Ponnin kinaavinte mandasmitham?
[Is the heart getting filled with
a golden dream’s soft smile?]

Doore doore, ithal viriyaanoru
swapnam kaathu nilkkunnu
[Far away, to open its petals
a dream is waiting]
Jaalakam thurakkum, kaatiloode akale…
kandu, thiri neetti, malar thookum punchiri minnayam
[Opens the window, the wind and through that at a distance
saw, (cautiously)extending a flame, a beautiful flash of a smile]
Enno, ini enno, ithal choodum nalloru pookaalam
[Sometime soon (we hope), will bloom a pretty spring]
