Ilam kaattil oru eenam moolunnu aaro
Ilam thennalo, saakshaal Kannan thaano?
[In this wind, someone is humming a tune
Is it the light breeze or is it Kannan(Lord Krishna) himself?]
Virahaardram** aayi, yamuna pulinam neele
Vanamaali than murali hridayam nee
[Acutely missing, on the banks of Yamuna at length,
you are the heart of Vanamaali’s(Lord Krishna’s) flute sound]
Yuga sandhyakal ee vazhi
parannu akannu poyi
[Many dusks of yester eras, along this path
have flown away]

Mazhathulli ee neeyil nritham cheyke,
madham thulli nin moham enthe paadi?
[When raindrops dance on you,
tripping with excitement, what did your wishes sing?]
Kulirmanju neer aniyum panineer poo?,
alachaarthiloode anayum oru neer kiliyo?
[Wearing these chilly dew drops, are you a fragrant rose flower?
Riding on the waves, a water bird?]
Vanajyothsna than thozhiyo?
Sakhi ithaaru nee?
[Are you the friend of moonlight in the jungle?
Dear girl, who are you?]

*Vishu/kani – Vishu is the new year in Malayalam calendar and on Vishu morning, it is auspicious to view a good kani or sight first thing in the morning as per Hindu custom. It consists of fruits and other nice things including a beautiful yellow flower called konna. Vishu usually falls in April and all konna trees will be flowering around that season. It is a beautiful sight by itself.
**Virahaardram – literally means moist/filled with viraham. I can’t think of an equivalent word in English to describe viraham. It is the acute missing you feel when a loved one is away.
