A story about a poet Madhavan and his relationship with different women.

Thathakathaa.. Thaazhe veenaal thaangukille nee?
[With your eyes and mind you drink (me) in, you obstinate fellow!
Thathakathaa*** If I fall, wont you catch me?]

Madamodu kothiyodu thaen kudikkaan vandu vannaalo? (Oho? Bhaagyam! Pinne? )
[(Only to drain the flower…)
With frenzy and gluttony to drink the nectar, what if the beetle come?(Oh? Great! And then?)]

Thunayaal othu aadi paadum pookkaalam
Inakoodi swapnam kaanum raakkaalam
[Dancing and singing with your partner,this spring
Dreaming and coupling, this night time]

Enne njaan ninnullil kande
Kando? Nee kando?
[I saw myself in your heart
(Did you) see? Did you see?]
Nin kaanaathaen koodum kande.
Hayyayye! Nee ente naanom kande
[I saw your hidden nest of nectar
And you saw my shyness too]
Oru swapnam pole… (Pore? Pore?)…mara ellaam poye..
Hayye! Maanakkedaaye! …aaye! Aaye!
[Like a dream…(isn’t that enough? enough?)…all covers were gone..
Oh man! That’s disgraceful!.. Yes it is!]

Vaazhvu poovum, vaakku poonthenum, neeyarinjille?

[This life is a flower, and words are nectar, didn’t you know?
(Oh really? Is it like that,now!)
I adorned you in jewelry and came seeking your affection]

+ This is a poem by a Tamil saint Ramalinga Swamikal popularly known as Vallalar(Wiki link). Here is the reference link to the explanation of the poem I found. Since I am not a native Tamil speaker, please excuse any mistakes in my paraphrasing.
*Nere vaa nere po – literally means ‘Come straight, go straight’. This phrase is colloquially used to mean ‘matter of fact’ or ‘straighforward’.
**Thanthonni is someone who does as (s)he feels. I can’t think of an equivalent English word which captures the meaning of this. It is usually used in a bad way for a person who is headstrong and does things which is different from the expected norm. Also this phrase is liberally used by Malayali parents whenever they scold their children for disobedience. 🙂
