Nanni Aarodu

(Translation on request for RF)
Sidharthan, a high-functioning resident in a rehabilitation center for psychiatric patients, focuses on living an ascetic life. Sidharthan gets introduced to Mariana and he is taken with her. Unbeknownst to him, Mariana is doing research on artistic abilities in psychiatric patients and he is only a subject for her studies. One day Sidharthan finds out about this. He goes to walk off his anger in the woods while contemplating who to thank for his life on this earth, a poem written by him. This beautiful lyrics, written by Kavalam Narayana Panicker and rendered by Dasettan, remain a favorite of Malayalis through the years.

Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]
Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]
Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]

Bhoomiyil vannu avathaaram edukkaan enikkannu…
[For me being born on this earth…]
Paathi mey aaya pithaavino?
[My father who is half of my body?]
Pinnathil paathi mey aaya maathaavino?
[Or my mother who is the other half?]
Pinneyum patthu maasam chumannu enne
njan aakkiya garbhapaathrathino?
[Or the womb that carried me for another ten months
and made me into me?]
Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]

Bhoomiyil vannu avathaaram edukkaan enikkannu…
[For me being born on this earth…]
Paathi mey aaya pithaavino?
Pinnathil paathi mey aaya maathaavino?
[My father who is half of my body?
Or my mother who is the other half?]
Pinneyum patthu maasam chumannu enne
njan aakkiya garbhapaathrathino?
[Or the womb that carried me for another ten months
and made me into me?]
Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]

Potti karanju kondu oozhiyil aadyam aayi
Njan pettu veena shubha muhurthathino?
[Screaming for the first time into this world,
the auspicious moment I was born?]
Potti karanju kondu oozhiyil aadyam aayi
Njan pettu veena shubha muhurthathino?
[Screaming for the first time into this world,
the auspicious moment I was born?]
Raktha bandham murichu annyan aayi theeruvan
aadhyam padippicha pokkil kodiyodo?
[Or the umbilical cord who first taught me to
cut off the blood relation and be a stranger?]
Nanni aarodu njaan chollendu?
[Who should I thank?]

Maanju pokunnu shirolikhithangalum
Mayunnu maaraala kettiya chinthayum
[The destinies are disappearing
And so are the cobwebbed ideas]
Maanju pokunnu shirolikhithangalum
Mayunnu maaraala kettiya chinthayum
[The destinies are disappearing
And so are the cobwebbed ideas]
Pakida panthrandum kalicha swapnangale
Palakuri ningalkku swasthiyekatte njaan
[Hey dreams, who played the winning game of dice,
I praise you many times (for getting me ahead in life)]
