Ezra, a rich Jewish man falls in love with Rosie, a poor Christian girl. The beautiful eerie music and the melancholic timbre in the singing clues us in to the doomed ending of that love story.

*Thambiran/Thamburan/Thambraan is a male of higher socio-economic status in Kerala. This term is usually used to address princes/kings or the head of the local rich family by their employers. Sometimes this term is also used in reference to God. In this case, I’m unsure if this is meant for Ezra (who is from a rich family) or God. If I were to guess, I would pick God because of the next word which comes in the verse.
** Noyambu/Nombu means lent or the season of abstinence. For Malayali Christians, major Noyambu for comes right before Easter (50 days) or before Christmas (25 days). People refrain from eating non-vegetarian food and from conducting/participating in any celebrations like weddings. In the Old Testament in Christian Bible, it is said that people used to wear sacks and cover themselves in ashes as a way of denouncing any adornments during that time. The Old Testament is based on the Jewish collection of holy texts – TaNaKh, so both early Christians and Jews lived by these rules.
+Since Ezra’s and Rosie’s story happens at a time when society was generally more conservative than our time now, I am guessing noyambu was observed in a stricter fashion. In the video Ezra is shown gifting a beautiful dress to Rosie. So I think the first two lines are being asked in a dilemma – should the adornments be denounced or should they be be worn while noyambu is going on? This is totally my interpretation from the scene, not sure if that is what the lyricist meant.
***Alukaathu/alukathu kammal is a layered gold earring. It is a traditional Kerala jewelry, usually worn by Muslim women from my knowledge. It is definitely a symbol of affluence because it covers the whole ear.
****Amba kathuri/Kasthuri manjal is a medicinal root used for Ayurvedic skin care. It looks much like turmeric and has a unique fragrance. Usually the ground/powdered version is used for reducing acne on face or can be applied all over the body for glowing skin.
