Maanikya Malar

An old maappila paattu (Islamic folk song of Kerala) recently made popular by the movie Oru Adaar Love where it is seen performed on stage in a school and the students enjoying it. It talks about the story of Prophet Muhammad of Islam and his first wife Khadija. In short, Khadija was a successful business woman and she commissioned Prophet Muhammad to do trade for her in faraway lands. She was impressed about the fair way he conducted  the trade and later on proposed marriage to him. (Wiki Link)

Maanikya malar aaya poovi, mahathiyaam Khadeeja Beevi
Makka enna punya naattil, vilasidum naari, vilasidum naari
[Like a ruby(precious) flower, the great Khadeeja Beevi
in the blessed land of Mecca, she lived, she lived]

Maanikya malar aaya poovi, mahathiyaam Khadeeja Beevi
Makka enna punya naattil, vilasidum naari, vilasidum naari
[Like a ruby(precious) flower, the great Khadeeja Beevi
in the blessed land of Mecca, she lived, she lived]

Haathimunnabiye Vilichu, kachavadathinnu ayachu
Kanda neram khalbin ullil moham udhichu, moham udhichu
[She called Nabi, sent him for trading
When they saw each other in their hearts, a wish took form, a wish took form]

Kachavadavum kazhinju Muthrasoolulla vannu
Kalyana aalochanakkayi Beevi thuniju, Beevi thuniju
[After the trade when he came back
for a marriage, Beevi agreed, Beevi agreed]

Maanikya malar aaya poovi, mahathiyaam Khadeeja Beevi
Makka enna punya naattil, vilasidum naari, vilasidum naari
[Like a ruby(precious) flower, the great Khadeeja Beevi
in the blessed land of Mecca, she lived, she lived]

  1. Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much Thumbi Vaa . Thank you 😀 .

    1. Yeah, the literal meaning of ‘thuninju’ is ‘undertook’ or even ‘dared’ in some cases. She undertook an alliance with him. In some lines, I stay away from literal translation to keep the flow of the lines.
