Pulkodiyil

(Translation on request for SS.)
Sameera was cast away by her ex-husband and in-laws for wanting to follow her career as a nurse. She navigates life with a purpose, supporting her side of the family. She gets remarried to Shaheed, her colleague, in an effort to go work in Iraq, as her family would not have let her go abroad while she’s single. Shaheed on the other hand, genuinely likes Sameera and hopes his affections are returned. He clearly understands her as a person and why her smiles are hard to come by. And when he sees her smile and return his love cautiously, he treasures it. The lyrics take you through Shaheed’s feelings for her, on how he would keep her safe through all turbulence in life. Sameera is one of the best in Parvathy’s career, she nailed that grit shown by a no-nonsense woman fighting adversities, pretty well.

Pulkodiyil thoomani thoomani, thoomani pol punchiri ninchiri
Veenaliyathe.. maanjozhiyaathe, nee marayathe
[Dew drops on grass blades, your smiles are like those dew drops
Without dropping or dissolving, without fading, without you disappearing]

Pulkodiyil thoomani thoomani, thoomani pol punchiri ninchiri
Veenaliyathe.. maanjozhiyaathe, nee marayathe…
[Dew drops on grass blades, your smiles are like those dew drops
Without dropping and dissolving, without fading, without you disappearing…]
…priyamodithu njan karathaaril karuthi eriyum marubhoovil
pala paathakal thaandukayalle, melle…melle…
[…lovingly in my palms, I cared (for you) in this blazing desert
as we take many paths (in life) slowly…slowly]
Oru kaattilumaayi kalaraathe, oru veerpilum aarthu ulayathe
Karale, kuliraaya kinaave, nove… thaene…
[(I will) protect you from dispersing in winds, also from swaying in (despondent) sighs
my darling, my beautiful dream, my pain…my beloved…]

Thoomanjil maayalle..Paazhmannil veezhalle..
Aakaasham kaanalle..Aarodum mindalle
[Let you not fade away in the fog…Let you not fall on the wayside
Let you not see the sky…Let you not talk to anyone*]
Thoomanjil maayalle..Paazhmannil veezhalle..
Aakaasham kaanalle..Aarodum mindalle
[Let you not fade away in the fog…Let you not fall on the wayside
Let you not see the sky…Let you not talk to anyone*]

Manal kaattil aetho saandhyanilaavil,
Kadal kaattu veeshum aekaantha raavil
[On a moonlit night in this sandy forest,
A sea breeze flows on this lonely night]
Kinaathoni neengum moogamaayi doore,
vilikkunnu theeram chilambocha poley
[A boat of dreams move ahead silently at a distance,
and the shore is calling, like an anklet’s chime]
Arikil arikil chernnanayaan, iru manassum kuliraniye
Iniyum oru pon pulariyithil shalabhamayi unaraan
[To be close to each other, both our hearts are yearning
On another new golden morning, to wake up as butterflies]
Cheruvaan… chaayuvaan… aaluvaan…
[to unite…to lean…to burn]

Thoomanjil maayalle..Paazhmannil veezhalle..
Aakaasham kaanalle..Aarodum mindalle
[Let you not fade away in the fog…Let you not fall on the wayside
Let you not see the sky…Let you not talk to anyone*]
Thoomanjil maayalle..Paazhmannil veezhalle..
Aakaasham kaanalle..Aarodum mindalle
[Let you not fade away in the fog…Let you not fall on the wayside
Let you not see the sky…Let you not talk to anyone*]

*This line seems weirdly controlling, but I think it is only meant as – You are too precious to be in any harm caused by others. ‘Aakaasham kaanalle’ (Don’t let it see the sky) makes me so nostalgic. When I was in school, some kids would keep peacock feathers inside pages of books, believing they would multiply after certain number of days if they were never shown the sky (or light). Of course nothing of that sort happened, it was just a childhood fantasy; the innocence though, priceless!  🙂
