Kannile Poikayilu

(Translation on request for M)
Sreeja, a helper in a grocery store and Prasad, a farmer, live in a small-town in central Kerala. After an initial misunderstanding which makes Sreeja extremely mad at Prasad, he apologizes profusely for the mistake he made due his unnecessary nosiness and she accepts. They keep meeting each other around the neighborhood and slowly fall for each other. Nimisha Sajayan blew my mind as the surefooted spitfire, Sreeja. Rafeeq Ahammed’s lines are so beautiful in this song. One of my favorites in 2017.

Kannile poikayilu, kunjala maalayilu
Njaano? meeno? kanaatheeram thaedi pokum,
[In the pond that are your eyes, in those garland of tiny waves
Is it me? or a fish? or searching for new lands, ]
…ponkinaa thonikalo? ponnarayannangalo?
[…are they dreamy boats? or beautiful swans?]
Chaanjirangana chandana veyililu njaan alinjoru velayilu
Ponnarali poovu nulli ninne njan orthathalle
[In the slanting sandalwood hued sunlight, when I melt away
I picked a beautiful arali flower and thought of you]

Aattu vakkile aanjili chottile kaathu ninnoru thoniyalle,
Aarthirambi nirayana nerathu neenthi ethanam onnarike
[Near the aanjili tree on the banks of the river, you are a waiting boat
When it floods heavily, I will swim to you]
Aarum onnu nanayan kothikkana raavil aadya mazha kuliril,
nee parayum kadhakalil okkeyum poomazha thulli thulli vannu
[During this pleasantly chilly first rain at night in which everyone wants to get wet,
in the stories you tell me, beautiful rain drops came leaping]

Kannile poikayilu, kunjala maalayilu
Njaano? meeno? kanaatheeram thaedi pokum,
[In the pond that are your eyes, in those garland of tiny waves
Is it me? or a fish? or searching for new lands, ]
…ponkinaa thonikalo? ponnarayannangalo?
[…are they dreamy boats? or beautiful swans?]

Pokku veyilinum mungi kulikkuvaan aarthi thonnana cholayalle
Koothadikkum paral meene kandappol orthupoyi nin neer mizhi njan
[Even the sun eagerly wants to dip in this stream and
when I saw the jumping fishes in there, I reminisced about your eyes]
Kaatil aadum marangale pol ninte nerkku chaayum kinaavukalil
Nee nadakkum vazhikaliloodoru thaeku chaalu pol odi vannu
[Like the trees which sway in the breeze, I lean to you in my dreams
In the paths you take, I run like a little channel (of water), to be close to you]

Kannile poikayilu, kunjala maalayilu
Njaano? meeno? kanaatheeram thaedi pokum,
[In the pond that are your eyes, in those garland of tiny waves
Is it me? or a fish? or searching for new lands, ]
…ponkinaa thonikalo? ponnarayannangalo?
[…are they dreamy boats? or beautiful swans?]
Chaanjirangana chandana veyililu njaan alinjoru velayilu
Ponnarali poovu nulli ninne njan orthathalle
[In the slanting sandalwood hued sunlight, when I melt away
I picked a beautiful arali flower and thought of you]
