Nanavere

Moms! If I go by the majority of moms I have met in my life – they keep everyone in check in the family, they take care of everyone, at times even ignoring their tiredness. Not sure what prepares them, but they provide the stability and strength you need when everything seems to be falling apart around you. But…what happens when moms get sick?

This touching melody visually takes us through the reactions of members in the Chacko family when the mom, Sheela, gets diagnosed with cancer. This movie is a beautiful slice of life. Kudos to Althaf for the story and direction and Nivin for recognizing the potential and supporting a debutant director and music director (Justin Varghese). I could relate to this so much, especially to the ending scene of this movie. My mom is a retired professor. And a cancer survivor.

Nanavere thannittum, muttathe poomottil
punchiri viriyaanjathenthe?
[Even after giving a lot of moisture, on this flower bud in the yard,
why isn’t a smile blooming?]
Veyil vannu thalodittum, bhoomiye moodunna
manjala maayanjathenthe?
[Even after the sunlight caressed, covering this earth…
…the fog, why isn’t it receding?]

Oru kunju novu ee vazhikalil vanno?
Oru mounam ivide piranno?
[Did a tiny pain come this way?
Did a silence take birth here?]
Oru kunju novu ee vazhikalil vanno?
Oru mounam ivide piranno?
[Did a tiny pain come this way?
Did a silence take birth here?]

Janaloram vannalum cheru thennal innu enthe
kulirekathengo maanjuvo? maanjuvo?
[Even when it came by the window, this little breeze
without giving solace, did it disappear? disappear?]
Kalivaakkin thaalangal, vili kelkkathorathaayo
Virasam izhayunnu naalukal…naalukal…
[The beats of banters, did they become distant?
Unpleasantly inching on, the days… the days…]
Kuyil enthe vannila?, thaen paattum thannila?
Raavinte rareeram illa?
[Why didn’t the cuckoo come? Or sing a sweet song?
Why isn’t the night singing a lullaby?]

Oru kunju novu ee vazhikalil vanno?
Oru mounam ivide piranno?
[Did a tiny pain come this way?
Did a silence take birth here?]
Oru kunju novu ee vazhikalil vanno?
Oru mounam ivide piranno?
