Entammede Jimikki Kammal

One of the popular songs in recent times from the movie Velipaadinte Pusthakam. As I haven’t watched the movie yet, I’m unable to gauge how well the verses gel with the scenes on the screen. From the looks of it, the singing gang seems to be making fun of a rival gang in college. This is a pretty unique song as the refrain is part of a silly kiddie rhyme and some verses are Malayalam proverbs. We do have more of those kiddie rhymes like ‘Ayyappantamma neyyappam chuttu’, ‘Saare Saare Sambhare’, ‘Jimikki Jimikki Jaanaki'(What to say, we love our jimikkis :D) etc. Most of this song is translated literally here, with foot notes of what some of it means figuratively.

+Entammede jimikki kammal, entappan kattondu poye!
Entappante brandy kuppi, entamma kudichu theerthe!
[My mom’s jhumka earrings, my dad stole it!
My dad’s brandy bottle, my mom finished it!]
+Entammede jimikki kammal, entappan kattondu poye
Entappante brandy kuppi, entamma kudichu theerthe
[My mom’s jhumka earrings, my dad stole it!
My dad’s brandy bottle, my mom finished it!]

Ividoru chaakarayum* velakaleem** othu vannapol
Chilarude thorthu keeri poya karyam orthupokave
[It feels like a big catch and a performance have come together
And I’m noticing some people who cannot handle these]
Alakadal kattinu nee kaathu kuthan paadupedenda
Sadachaara senapathi veera, padukaamalolupa!
[Don’t try to pierce the ears of an ocean wind
You moral police, who are perverts in real!]

+Entammede jimikki kammal, entappan kattondu poye!
Entappante brandy kuppi, entamma kudichu theerthe!

++Chemmeen chadiyal muttolam, pinnem chadiyal chattiyolam
Chumma oothaan nokkaathe, thaayam kalikkaan nikkaathe
[If a shrimp jumps it reaches the knee, if it jumps again it reaches the pan
Don’t try to blow me away, don’t play dice game here]
Vattam chuttichorellam, vatta poojyam polaaye
Vettam kaanaan kothiyaaye, vettathu irangan madiyaaye
[The ones who made me go around in circles, have become zeros themselves
They long to see light, they are ashamed to come out in light]
Kalivesham poyeda, Ini vesham maareda
+++ Malayattoor palliyil oru kurishum koda*** neraam
[The angry avatar is gone, now you change your avatar
Let’s pledge a cross offering in Malayattoor church]
++++Mala pole vannathu,  eli pole paanjeda
Channam pinnam chellam mazha podikkunnu podiyoothakale
[The one which came as a mountain, fled like a mouse
Pitter patter the rain drops fall making dust disappear]

+The two lines in the refrain are part of a silly rhyme, doesn’t mean much otherwise.
*Chaakara is a phenomenon unique to Kerala’s coastal regions. A mud bank forms along the coast creating calm area of water as opposed to the generally rough sea during monsoon season. This attracts a lot of fishes, making it a season of big catch closer to the coast for the fishermen who are advised to not go deep sea fishing during that time. (White Paper link). The word chaakara is thus colloquially used to describe any big win.
**Velakali is a traditional martial arts dance form. (Wiki link)
++ Figuratively this means when you are small fry, trying to achieve more than what you can handle,  will land you in trouble.
+++ Malayattoor church is one of the ancient churches in Kerala believed to have set up by St. Thomas, the Apostle of Christ. (History – church website link)
***Kurishumkuda – literally translates to cross umbrella. I’m guessing it either means the umbrella used for the perunnal (church festivals) or the wooden cross pledged in return for favors from God in Malayattoor church. The Holy Week pilgrimage to Malayattoor church for Good Friday’s Stations of the cross (Way of the cross) is considered very auspicious. Devotees carry a wooden cross and trek up the mountain stopping at the various stations along the way. Here is the description of the pilgrimage.
++++Figuratively this means an anticipated huge event turned out anticlimactic.
