Muhurtham

(Translation on request for RF)
A reflective song from the movie Aham. Sidharthan is a high-functioning resident in a rehabilitation center for psychiatric patients. He focuses on living an ascetic life as a way of controlling his mind. The lyrics, written by the renowned Malayali theatre director and poet Kavalam Narayana Panicker, carries a lot of weight in expressing Sidharthan’s point of view on life. He believes life on earth is a tightening noose for humans and death releases us.

Muhurtham… muhurtham
Purushanumaayi prakruthi layikkum vara muhurtham
[This moment…this moment
This auspicious moment in which nature becomes one with man]
Ee mangalam aashamsikkum divya vichaaram
Ee mangalam aashamsikkum divya vichaaram
Marana bhaya thadavu illaa puzha ozhuki varunnu…
[This good thought that bids well wishes,
without fearing the shackles of death, (the good thought) is floating on
the river (of life)…]
pazhamathan aazham ariyaathe, adiyozhukkil
Evide ninno engo pokaan vannivide
[without realizing the depth of ancient history, on the undercurrents (of
the river of life)
From somewhere, to go somewhere else, we all came here (on the earth)]

Kettukalude piri murukumbol
Uttavarude mukhavum kande
[When the knots (of life) are tightening
Flashes of dearest’s faces come to our minds]
Koottasharithan mani unarumbol, shari-thettukal kanda pidippullor
Avar ariyappettotte
[When the final bell tolls, those people who have understanding about
right and wrong,
Let them be known]

Muhurtham… muhurtham
Purushanumaayi prakruthi layikkum vara muhurtham
[This moment… this moment
This auspicious moment in which nature becomes one with man]

Kettazhinjavar maanathoode chirakaatti
Thettukalude parihaarathinu chinthukalum paadi nadanne
[Those who are free from (life’s) knots are flying in the sky with their
wings
As a penance to their sins they are singing songs too]
Thaazhe chithayil thadi kariyumbol
Thalarum chiraku atta manasaakshi, muravili itte
[When the body is burning on the pyre
the tired conscience with its cut off wings, is mourning loudly]

Muhurtham…muhurtham
Purushanumaayi prakruthi layikkum vara muhurtham
[This moment… this moment
This auspicious moment in which nature becomes one with man]
