Pramadavanam Veendum

(Translation on request for A)
Abdullah, disguised as Ananthan Nampoothiri, stays at king Udaya Varma’s palace on the invitation of one of his relatives. Udaya Varma is not happy with this new person, but Abdullah wins over the king’s heart by singing this song. One of the hit movies of the 90’s, the songs are so nostalgic it takes me to a simpler time.

Pramadavanam veendum, rithu raagam choodi
Pramadavanam veendum, rithu raagam choodi
[The neglected forest has again, been adorned by the tunes of spring]
Shubha saayahnam pole, shubha saayahnam pole

the lighted lamp shaded by the palm, fills inside with the glow, and my…]

Aethetho kathayil yamunayil oru vana malarayi ozhukiya njaan
Aethetho kathayil yamunayil oru vana malarayi ozhukiya njaan
[In some random story, I float like a jungle flower in Yamuna (river)]
Yadhukula* madhurima thazhukiya muraliyil

[On this flute, caressed by the sweetness of Yadhukulam,
is awakening a Gita for the ages… today at this moment…]

[Like a beautiful twilight, like a beautiful twilight

…pramadavanam veendum rithu raagam choodi
[…neglected forest has again, been adorned by the tunes of spring]

+The two lines plainly means – I feel like a king when I am singing these beautiful verses by the poet.
*Yadhukulam is the ancestral family of Lord Krishna. So this line is referring to Lord Krishna’s flute.
**Gita – Refers to the sacred text Bhagavad Gita, a part of the Hindu epic Mahabharatha. This is a set of concepts to live by, believed to be narrated to Arjuna the warrior, by Lord Krishna his mentor.

  2. Thank you. Being a foreign born Malayalee without the advantage of learning Malayalam this is highly educational.

  3. Thank you. Helped me enjoy multiple things at the same time – Beautiful Malayalam, amazing kaavyam (lyrics) – what an imagination, Dasettaan singing, the composition…. heaven on earth.

  4. please add the credits if possible so this makes much more appreciated.
