Chillu Raanthal

Siddhu is a young man with anger management issues. The only saving grace in his life is his girlfriend, Anjali, who loves him despite his problems. This song really brings out his unexpressed feelings about how much she means to him.

Chillu* raanthal vilakke, chiri nee pozhikke
Idanenjin manicheppu onnu niranju chandham thudikke
[Hey hurricane lamp, when you smile,
my chest’s little box brims with your beauty]
Kinnarikkaan adukke, ulayum pathukke
Puthu velli kolussu ittu ente manasil eththum ushasse
[To whisper sweet nothings, you sway gently towards me
with your new silver anklets chiming in my heart, my dawn]
Thennal chilambumayi enne thodunnuvo?
…munne varaathoree minnum kinaavukal?
[Like a noisy breeze, are these touching me
…these seemingly unreachable glimmering dreams?]
Kannu chimmum** vasantha kaalame
Onnu ninne punarnnidaam ini
[Hey coy spring,
Let me embrace you]

Chillu* raanthal vilakke, chiri nee pozhikke
Idanenjin manicheppu onnu niranju chandham thudikke
[Hey hurricane lamp, when you smile,
my chest’s little box brims with your beauty]

Kannedukkathoraayiram yugam
Kandirikkan thonunnu ninn mukham
[Without taking my eyes off, for a thousand years,
I would love to watch your beautiful face]
Maari pol neer peythu thorathe ninte sneham
Athramel innu aardhramaakunnu ithu ente ullam
[Like a rain storm, your love never ceases pouring
And it makes my insides moist ]
Thoo mulle minnada chaarthunnuvo nee?
Maayalle ee pon pular punchiri!
[Hey jasmine, are you adorning yourself?
Let your pretty smile never fade!]

Chillu* raanthal vilakke, chiri nee pozhikke
Idanenjin manicheppu onnu niranju chandham thudikke
[Hey hurricane lamp, when you smile,
my chest’s little box brims with your beauty]

En manassin ulchoodine sadha,
Manju poley nin ormakal thodum
[This heat (anger) I have in my heart,
is cooled by thoughts of you.]
Kaalamo vaathil thurakunnu ithu ente munnil
Jeevitham inno thalirkkunnu melle melle
[Time is opening doors for me
Our life together is slowly budding today]
En ullil, ponpeeli neerthunnuvo nee?
Munneraan venpaatha neettunnuvo?
[In my mind, are you spreading your wings?
To succeed in life, are you extending me new paths?]

Chillu* raanthal vilakke, chiri nee pozhikke
Idanenjin manicheppu onnu niranju chandham thudikke
[Hey hurricane lamp, when you smile,
my chest’s little box brims with your beauty]
Kinnarikkaan adukke, ulayum pathukke
Puthu velli kolussu ittu ente manasil eththum ushasse
[To whisper sweet nothings, you sway gently towards me
with your new silver anklets chiming in my heart, my dawn]
Thennal chilambumayi enne thodunnuvo?
…munne varaathoree minnum kinaavukal?
[Like a noisy breeze, are these touching me
…these seemingly unreachable glimmering dreams?]
Kannu chimmum** vasantha kaalame
Onnu ninne punarnnidaam ini
[Hey coy spring,
Let me embrace you]

* Chillu means glass. The glass covering of the hurricane lamp is special because it protects the flame from blowing out even when there is wind, unlike a candle. So here she is being compared to this quiet, resilient presence in his life which never goes out even when there is a storm raging around him.
** Kannu chimmum means blinking.
